MATTHEW 19:16 - 29
The Bible speaks about a young rich man that came to Jesus in public ready to show Jesus and the world that he was worthy of receiving God's Eternal Life.
He stated his questions to Jesus who he called "the good Teacher" as if he was ready to learn, but all along he thought he knew the answers and was ready to present himself in self-righteousness before Jesus and all present.
What must I do to gain eternal life? He asked. Jesus answered; you must keep the commandments. The young man replied: Which ones? (as if we could keep some and not others). Jesus listed the six commandments that deal with human to human relationships and the young man very excited and self-righteous replied: I keep them all since I was young. Then he asked: What else am I lacking? As if his eternal place in the Kingdom of God was secured. Jesus did not beat around the bush, he went right to the point; Jesus said: You are lacking one thing in order to be perfect; go and sell all you have and give to the poor and you follow me. The young man could not accept it and walked away.
With that request Jesus was dealing with the four commandments that He had omitted before. The four commandments that deal with the human-God relationship. With that request Jesus was bringing out the fact that God must occupy the first place in the hearts of those that truly wish to seek Him and serve Him. He will not settle for anything less. Jesus the teacher had clearly taught that we must make treasures in heaven rather than earth, earthly treasures will perish but heavenly treasures are forever. Wherever your treasures are that is where your heart will be. It is clear that the young man's treasures were his earthly possessions and God would have to take second place. If we want to truly serve God and be used for His will and purpose we must give God the first place in our hearts and give to God your life together with God's time of worship and devotion and especially His Sabbath (Sunday for Christians) should never be compromised with anything else that would wrestle to take God's place. God's commandments are not negotiable they must be kept as He request in order for you to gain your place in the Kingdom of God.
When the disciples heard the request and were confronted with Jesus' high standards they asked: Who then can be saved? Jesus replied: with men this is impossible but with God all things are possible. Jesus' request and high standards did not just request riches and possessions but it also include family. Verse 29 says: And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or land for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
What or who is taking first place in your heart? Amend your heart today and put God first and be blessed.
